BTEC showcases the CEO’s of twenty of Buffalo’s most professive “new economy” high tech companies.   Buffalo Homecoming’s BTEC will be held at the Statler Grand Ballroom this free event is not to be missed!  The stereotype of Buffalo is that it is a town filled with blue collar lunch bucket factory workers with a love of chicken wings and Canadian Beer. Well, the wings and beer thing is true, but Buffalo is also home to a growing and thriving new economy.

This is a networking event at which larger companies can show the way to success, mid-level companies can reach out to new customers, find talent, locate real estate, and smaller companies that are just starting out can find some investors or just share their plans.

BTEC will be interactive, with questions from the online community via text and Twitter, live attendees, and the whole event will be streamed online via BuffaloHomecoming.com, wnymedia.net, and ustream.tv. When we’re done, we’ll upload each presentation to dozens of viral video sites to spread the word about Buffalo’s business future.

Tim Russert gave our city a face and a voice, and there was no greater Buffalo supporter. Tim Russert was honest and decent and hardworking – Tim Russert was Buffalo, and Tim was Buffalo’s favorite son. The loss of Tim Russert is felt acutely by all who knew him and by so many who never had the pleasure of meeting him.

Tim Russert did single-handedly and very successfully what we collectively seek to do with Buffalo By Choice and Buffalo Homecoming, and he has done it for decades. The radio spot he recorded for the event last year generated a remarkable level of recognition and gave the fledgling endeavor enormous credibility. Tim Russert expressed a desire to support the event again this year.

We all harbored a secret hope that Tim Russert might be back in town during Buffalo Homecoming — that he might just turn up at BTEC or the Career Fair Friday morning, drop by Arts in the Park that afternoon, make a cameo appearance at the Block Party Saturday night or join us for Brunch on Sunday… Tim Russert was known for doing this sort of thing, and we had our fingers crossed. Now we know Tim Russert will not be with us or with his family on that weekend or on any other.

 Entertainment on the outdoor stage at Main and Tupper is intrinsically Buffalo. The lineup combines nostalgia and longing with an exciting peek into the future. Every act was chosen to tell a facet of Buffalo’s story. Start off with a look into the future:

• Caitlin Koch is considered one the most exciting fresh young talents in WNY. She won Kiss 98.5’s Buffalo Idol contest in 2004 and has sung at HSBC Arena in front of a crowd of 14,000. Just 18 years old, Caitlin is an Orchard Park HS grad and just completed her freshman year at Canisius. Maybe the Block Party will help launch this brilliant young performer. How cool would that be??
• Caitlin will be followed by Buffalo-born (at Sister’s Hospital on his father’s bowling night, as he is fond of pointing out) Greg Klyma, who calls himself the “Rustbelt Vagabond.” Although he’s been on the road for a decade now and has a national following, he still has a 716 area code and receives his mail in Cheektowaga. His folksy repertoire is rife with local allusions - check out Two degrees in Buffalo. He is the quintessential expat who just keeps on coming back, wrooted deeply in the City, grabbing at chances to play at old haunts and experience Buffalo. Where better to perform than at the Homecoming?
• You knew him as the lead singer of resoundingly successful Buffalo band Klear. The inimitable Fred Schafer, currently on tour with Collective Soul, is coming back to Buffalo to start cranking up the volume at 9:20. Fred’s MySpace page features a plea to “Bring Fred Shafer to Buffalo” - so we are — along with news of his new EP release this summer. He is being touted as the “next Bruce Springsteen” - let’s see. At the Homecoming!
• How could you have a reunion without Buffalo’s own reunited Great Train Robbery? The best band on the scene in 1985 is rocking Buffalo again 25 years later… This beloved ska group started rocking Buffalo in the 1980s with a unique fusion of rock, ska, reggae, and intensity. After a long hiatus, The Great Train Robbery is back and ready to reclaim their rightful place on Buffalo’s amazing music scene.
• For a while we contemplated having a national headliner for this event. But it soon became clear that Buffalo Homecoming has got to be Buffalo through and through. It would be wrong, somehow, to import talent from elsewhere to showcase in Buffalo. We have headliner talent right here - tons of it! In fact, we ultimately found it hard to choose. But Crittenden, our very own nationally acclaimed jazz rock and soul group, bubbled to the surface, not just because they’re an awesome band, but because they are in concert with the mission of Buffalo Homecoming and are giving back to the community. Crittenden is producing some of the best jazz rock and soul sounds in Buffalo. But in addition to truly excellent music that is rapidly gaining national recognition and a significant following, this dynamic group represents all that Buffalo By Choice and Buffalo Homecoming celebrates and promotes - people stepping up to the plate and doing things for Buffalo just because they need to be done. This is what we showcase every month at our Happy To Be Here Hours, and it’s what is propelling Buffalo’s renaissance. Buffalo-born Eric Crittenden’s journey over the past decade from jail to clean and sober is inspiring in and of itself, but this young man has translated his personal experience into a force for good which he is calling Image Urban Arts. Crittenden believes that music saved his life and he lives for giving back to the community. In fact, the entire band is dedicated to the “preservation and promotion of multi-cultural urban art forms, through the education and performance of multi-cultural urban art.” Eric has recruited excellent fellow musicians who have also eschewed the darker sides of the music scene and choose to demonstrate that great music can grow out of a wholesome lifestyle. We’re talking about the likes of Jerry Livingston, DMott, Wade Hawkins, Kenny Hawkins and DJ Cutler! The entire band works with at-risk youth to “promote a positive image of oneself and of the community.” They will weave some of the young musicians they work with into their sets on the outdoor stage.

But wait there’s more!

In addition to the Outdoor Stage, the entire 600 Block is engaged in this free Block Party!

• Theatre Plus’s world premier of Lament for Joe is on stage at the Alleyway Theatre Main Stage at 7 p.m.This is Lee Allan Hartlieb début as a playwright. Born in Dunkirk and living in Buffalo, he is an artist with People Inc.’s fine arts program The Arts Experience. Mr. Hartleib has spastic quadriplegia due to a traumatic brain injury as a child, but has not allowed his physical limitations to get in the way of his creative abilities. We are thrilled to be part of his emergence onto the Buffalo arts & cultural scene and to support People Inc.’s excellent arts program.
• The Arts Council is offering Rocky Horror Show at Market Arcade Theater at 10 p.m. and midnight. In addition to welcoming the passionate fans in costume at the Block Party, we are building on a long Dipson tradition in Buffalo. Who can forget the long run of Rocky Horror at the Amherst Theater at Main and Bailey? So this is a reunion of all those who love this highly interactive and incredibly fun flick.
• CEPA Gallery is hosting a wine and cheese reception for the Writing with Light exhibition featuring work by students from three Buffalo Public Schools: Native American Magnet, Frederick Law Olmsted and Highgate Heights. Writing with Light is a joint venture between CEPA Gallery and Just Buffalo Literary Center, encompassing a series of original education programs that help students engage in challenging, thought-provoking activities that integrate core curricular subjects with the literary and photographic arts. These multidisciplinary initiatives have been successful in connecting young people with their families, neighborhoods, and cultural heritage, encouraging self-exploration and creative self-expression. Also on view will be two MFA Thesis Exhibitions by UB graduate students: Scripted Image: (Re) Visions of Authority by Kevin Charles Kline (Underground Gallery), and Enthusiast: Calls and Orders by Joel Brenden (Market Arcade Atrium).
• Filter will be on stage at the Town Ballroom.
• And of course, Wicked will be on stage at Shea’s at 8:00 pm. Buffalo Homecoming is pleased to promote Shea’s at the Arts in the Park event on Friday (5:00-8:00 on the back steps of the Albright-Knox and in the Marcy Casino in Delaware Park) and throughout the year via the Buffalo By Choice e-newsletter. Shea’s is the Theatre District’s crown jewel. The entire audience will be encouraged to join the Block Party once the curtain on this delightful musical falls, to continue the fun. After all, the Wizard of Oz is all about going home - as is the Homecoming!
• Even the Bisons have stepped up to the plate to support the Buffalo Homecoming and this fabulous Block Party. In addition to urging our Downtown Housing Tour (Market Arcade 1:00-5:00) takers to stay downtown for the game, we are “Bringing home the Herd” for the Buffalo Homecoming, and the Bisons are going to send the Herd to the Block Party. Our favorite team has invited Buffalo Homecoming representatives to be on the field pre-game to issue a personal invitation to the entire stadium, has committed to Big Screen reminders throughout the evening, and will remind fans to join the Block Party following the game during the 7^th Inning Stretch and at the end of game. Who knows…some of the players may even end up in the crowd and on stage!

And the Block Party is also a Reunion! Every high school, college, university, sports team, organization and branch of the military is invited to hang their banner and host a mini-reunion. The banners will hang on the train fencing between the Town Ballroom and Tupper, and Block Party participants will be furnished with a map. This should make for a roving reunion, with people moving from one to the next, reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. We want everyone in Buffalo and those who have left to come and celebrate all the reasons why Buffalo is unlike anywhere else.

This event is a great opportunity to build community. It is collaborative and homespun and intrinsically Buffalo. It showcases many of our assets - from great music to fine theater to up-and-coming artists to our beloved sports - and it’s fun!

Four Days to Fall in Love with Buffalo.  All over again!

Buffalo Homecoming has organized the four days to optimize your enjoyment of the Greater Buffalo area.  There will be tours, a career fair and a new look at hour “new economy” high tech companies.  We will be showcasing our cultural treasures, incredible dining experiences and a block party on Satuday night that is certain to rock the socks off the Theatre District!   And at the end, we will gather at the Buffalo Zoo and have a fabulous brunch with a sampling of the ethnic diversity we have here in the Greater Buffalo area.  Buffalo Homecoming is certainly the event to be part of!

So what is the plan for these four days that we call Buffalo Homecoming?

It all starts with a concept.  You are having friends come into town for the weekend.   What are you going to do with them to show off your community and entertain them for the weekend?  How are you going to spend your time?   Well when your guests get into town, the first thing you do is go out to dinner!  And that is just what we are going to do here at Buffalo Homecoming with:

• Katie Bihr is known all over Hollywood as a key make up artist. Her artwork is expressive and abstract often in series.
• Mark Donnelly, award-winning regional photographer who showcases Buffalo and Western New York in expressive photography. Images of Buffalo’s Olmsted parks will be featured.
• A.J. Fries’ work has been described as nostalgic, cosmic, powerful without being overstated, and unreal yet admittedly appetizing.The majority of his work focuses on the mass consumerism of American popular culture, and such large-scale portraits of Oreos and Ring Pops show the elegance that can exist in such mundane materials.

• Becky Koenig’s contemporary paintings and works on paper engage nature and technology themes, color theory and the human senses.

Downtown Housing Tour

Buffalo Homecoming is about the communities in Buffalo!  Take a one hour tour of some of Buffalo’s most beloved neighborhoods. Each is offered by the Neighborhood Associations, a Block Club or a community leader. Understand the history, see the architecture and meet the neighbors. You will be invited in for a visit — Buffalo IS the City of Good Neighbors!   At this time there are at least a dozen neighborhood assoications putting on tours.   Look for our announcement coming in the future or visit our website for more details.

Plan on eating at one of the many participating Buffalo Homecoming Restaurants for dinner and then join us in the Theatre District! 

After a day of spending time getting to know Buffalo what better thing to do than have a block party!   It is time to get to know the people of Buffalo NY!   Perhaps it is time to connect with old friends, there will be plenty of opportunity at this event! 

Buffalo Residents know how to throw a party!   And this year we are going to have a fabulous event of immense proprortions on the 600 block of Main Street featuring iconic Buffalo Bands!   There is something for everyone!   And it is FREE!  The outdoor stage at the Tupper end of the block is where you will want to be!

8:40      Greg Klyma – He calls himself the “rustbelt vagabond.” This nationally-known  Buffalo boy is flying home from Boston to engage and entertain us with his folksy, Buffalo songs in his beloved hometown.

10:00    The Great Train Robbery — the much-loved Buffalo ska group, recently reunited to the delight of local music lovers! The best band on the scene in 1985 is rocking Buffalo again 25 years later…

11:00     Crittendon! –a jazz, rock and soul tour de force. These boys do more than entertain, though. Eric Crittendon is reaching into the community to work with area at risk youth using Image performance to promote a positive image of self and community through edutainment. music as the medium. An amazingly accomplished and engaged group.

The Reunion Banners will provide places for every possible type of alumni to gather…colleges and universities, high schools, sports teams, branches of the military – even ski clubs and civic groups – are invited to take part in this reunion and invite their entire community to meet up with old and friends and make new ones under their banner. Music, food, entertainment, old friends, great times…the Buffalo Homecoming Block Party is the event of the season!

There is something for Everyone!

Get the evening off to a great early start at 7:00 p.m. with Theatre Plus’s world premier of Lament for Joe, by Lee Allan Hartlieb, on the Alleyway Theatre Main Stage. The play is about a married couple torn apart by evil forces beyond their control. Mr. Hartlieb was born in Dunkirk and is an artist with People Inc.’s fine arts program The Arts Experience. He has spastic quadriplegia due to a traumatic brain injury as a child, but has not allowed his physical limitations to get in the way of his creative abilities.

Watch for crazy folks in wild costumes (or put yours on!). Tthe highly interactive Rocky Horror Show is at the Market Arcade at 10:00 and then again at Midnight.

Release the Funny, by our own talented Jerry McKay, will also show at Market Arcade Theater. It’s hysterical - don’t miss it!

CEPA Gallery is hosting a wine & cheese reception for the Arts in the Schools to show off this new exhibit. Don’t miss this gala event – and a look at the work of our very talented up and coming young artists.

Filter is on stage at The Town Ballroom.  

Sunday Brunch at the Zoo

After an evening of partying at the Buffalo Block Party, we are going to start a little later today before you have to leave Buffalo NY.  But we don’t want you to go hungry and we definately don’t want you to leave without sampling some of the most incredible food anywhere!   Buffalo Homecoming wanted the whole family invovled and what better way than to have a Brunch at the Buffalo Zoo! 

The grand finale, featuring great ethnic Buffalo foods — think pierogi and beef on weck — and a “Buffalo Trivia Game Show”, by Quizmaster Dennis George. Maryalice Demler of Channel 2 News “On Your Side” will emcee as celebrity teams compete with guests for great prizes. Brunch ticket includes the cost of admission to the Zoo! The Upstate New York metropolitan areas of Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse rank in the top five best mid-sized cities for relocating families, according to a new study.   In cities with population of 600,000 to 1.3 million, Syracuse ranked second, followed by Rochester with Buffalo placing fifth.
